WAYNE ROONEY SHINES FOR EVERTON

Wayne Rooney's first goal back in blue inspired boyhood club Everton to a narrow opening-weekend victory against Stoke.

The former Manchester United player was cheered the loudest before a surprisingly energetic first half got under way, with a lackluster opening period eventually sparking into life in stoppage time.

After 13 record-breaking years at Manchester United, the 31-year-old made the ideal mark on his Premier League homecoming.

Everton had earlier struggled for fluidity as Ronald Koeman fielded five new signings from the outset, with Jordan Pickford comfortable in claiming a clean sheet.

Both teams began with three at the back and it was the away side who looked more incisive early, targeting the space in behind Everton's wing-backs.

Rooney struck with his first and only chance in the 44 minutes close to half-time. Dominic Calvert-Lewin crossed from the right, and Rooney was free to pick his spot with a header.

Aside from a couple of shots from distance by Idrissa Gueye, it was the first time Stoke keeper Jack Butland had been occupied.
